English Proficiency Requirements for Graduate Students

1. In order to enhance students’ competitiveness in employment and advanced studies, this Article has been established to address the English Proficiency Requirements apply to all CSIE Graduate Students.

2. All graduate students must fulfill at least one of the requirements listed below; except for those with degrees from English-Speaking countries may be exempted from the requirements. The test date should be within 4 years prior to entering NDHU or while studying in NDHU. Students must submit the original certification for verification.

3. Master’s Students (including Master program, Network & Multimedia Master program, International Master program) :

All master’s students should acquire at least one of the following English Proficiency certifications before graduation. Refer to No# 2 requirement above for the test date validation and score verification.

  1. * TOEFL iBT score 61 and above (TOEFL paper version PBT/ ITP score 500 and above) /
    * TOEIC score 600 and above /
    * GEPT (The General English Proficiency Test) Intermediate Level Second Stage, or High-Intermediate Level First Stage, or above (全民英檢,中級複試或中高級初試以上) /
    * Other equivalent official English proficiency exams offered in/outside of NDHU campus.

  2. Students may take the following English courses from either groups as an alternative to the requirements:
    A. Courses offered by the English Department, related to Listening, Communication, Oral Training, Reading, English Writing or Technical Writing, Composition, Translating, or English for Science and Technology with 3 credits and a minimum grade of B- or above.
    B. Courses offered by the General Education Department, related to Listening, Communication, Oral Training, Reading, English Writing or Technical Writing, Composition, Translating, or English for Science and Technology level (II) or above, with 3 credits and a minimum grade of B+ or above.


4. Doctoral Students:

All doctoral students should acquire at least one of the following English Proficiency certifications before applying for the Dissertation Defense. Refer to No# 2 requirement above for the test date validation and score verification.

  1. * TOEFL iBT score 79 and above (TOEFL paper version PBT/ITP score 550 and above) /
    * TOEIC score 780 and above /
    * GEPT (The General English Proficiency Test) High-Intermediate Level Second Stage, or above (全民英檢,中高級複試以上) /
    * Other equivalent official English proficiency exams offered in/outside of NDHU campus.

  2. Students may take the following English courses from either groups as an alternative to the requirements:
    A. Courses offered by the English Department, related to Listening, Communication, Oral Training, Reading, English Writing or Technical Writing, Composition, Translating, or English for Science and Technology with 6 credits and a minimum grade of B or above.
    B. Courses offered by the General Education Department: related to Listening, Communication, Oral Training, Reading, English Writing or Technical Writing, Composition, Translating, or English for Science andTechnology level (II) or above, with 6 credits and a minimum grade of A- or above.

5. This Requirement has been established by the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee, approved by the Departmental Executive Meeting, and announced and executed afterwards. Any amendment should follow the same process accordingly.
