Bio:

Trista is the owner of her consulting firm helping companies on machine learning and computer vision problems. Previously, she held various leadership positions from startups to research labs. While leading Cognitive Networks’ core algorithm and data science team, she helped lifting the customer counts and traffics by orders of magnitude. Cognitive Networks was acquired by Vizio, one of the largest TV manufacturers in the world. She founded Fotolugu, a computer vision company that helped companies monetizing images and videos. At Intel, she helped develop OpenCV. She architected Nvidia’s first video processor. Trista received her Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. She co-authored 26 publications, 10 issued and pending patents, and gave keynotes and invited lectures at conferences and universities.

Title:Visual Big Data in Real World

Abstract:

The explosion of visual data from mobile image captures, social sharing, the web, TV shows and movies, and the availability of large amount of metadata have created unprecedented opportunities and fundamental challenges to visual data mining and computer vision problems in general.

This talk provides an overview of recent developments in visual big data. Insights we didn’t have before with “small data” suddenly arise. Problems we didn’t see before are becoming critical. Algorithms that are ill fitted before are now attractive, esp. deep learning algorithms. In addition to reviewing interesting real-world visual big data developments, this talk hopes to brainstorm with the audience promising new directions.
