3. Research Areas

  • Research Areas

The research areas of CSIE are diverse, covering not only the current popular and important fields but also establishing unique features that align with local development conditions. The key research areas our department focuses on include the following:

  • Artificial Intelligence & Learning Machine
  • Cloud Computing & Big-Data Processing
  • Human-Machine Interaction Systems
  • Multimedia Systems
  • Computer Networks and Distributed Systems
  • Data and Knowledge Base Systems
  • VLSI Circuit & Embedded Systems Design
  • Parallel & Distributed Computing
  • Mobile & Pervasive Computing
  • Software Engineering
  • Cryptography and Information Security
  • Computing Theories and Algorithms
  • Programming Languages and Compiler Systems
  • Bioinformatics
  • Computer Graphics & Digital Games
  • Decision Support Systems

Building on academic research and keeping up with global trends, our department aligns with national and local needs, applying the latest research and development outcomes to advanced application fields. We aim to prosper the local economy, promote national development, and enhance human well-being. The main application areas include:

  • Interdisciplinary Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning —

Artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies are ushering in a new wave of digital revolution worldwide. Our department has long been invested in the research and development of these two technologies, and is currently actively applying them in areas such as trend analysis in commercial finance, wildlife conservation, indigenous language preservation, learning guidance and effectiveness analysis, traditional Chinese medicine pulse and constitution analysis support, and the gaming industry. These related technologies can provide significant benefits for the modernization of friendly nations.

  • Cloud-based Internet of Things Agricultural Data Analysis and Precision Agriculture Application —

Combining agricultural IoT smart sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles for multispectral plant protection measurement, comprehensive cloud database storage, and agricultural big data analysis, traditional pesticide-free organic agriculture in the Hualien and Taitung regions is upgraded to smart precision agriculture. This not only enhances crop quality and yield but also takes into account environmental sustainability. It is a key focus area for both our department and National Dong Hwa University’s medium and long-term development. These related technologies can further expand into other applications, such as smart cities and wildlife conservation.

  • Advanced Research and Innovative Applications of Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality Technologies —

The research and application of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies are another key feature of our department. Currently, these technologies are successfully integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) in areas such as smart human-machine interfaces, smart tourism, smart agriculture, and interactive smart teaching. For resource-scarce friendly nations, software can be used to provide many services that would otherwise require expensive hardware. The potential applications in education and healthcare are immense and are particularly suitable for areas and countries with many remote regions that require special attention.

  • Big Data Analysis and Smart Tourism Application for Tourist Itineraries and Consumer Behavior —

Through mobile apps, smart wristbands, IoT, RFID, and other technologies, the collection and analysis of big data on tourist itineraries and consumer behavior are recorded. This data is used to analyze and establish patterns in tourist itineraries and consumer behavior. By balancing the needs of tourists and the utilization of tourism resources, dynamic optimization and guidance are provided, creating a win-win-win situation for tourists, businesses, and the environment. These related technologies can be widely applied in various fields such as hospitals, supermarkets, amusement parks, city tours, and national parks.

  • Advanced Network and Information Security Technologies and Innovative Applications —

Network and information security is another key focus of our department’s research and development. It covers traditional networks, next-generation internet, cloud networks, wireless mobile networks, software-defined networks, smart Internet of Things, and network information security. This can provide significant assistance to friendly nations in planning their national information infrastructure and also help in building information security for these nations.

  • Research and Application of Learning Technology and Smart Teaching Assistance Systems —

After the merger with Hualien University of Education at National Dong Hwa University, our department has increased its comprehensive and strong expertise in computer-aided instruction and learning technology. Combining existing expertise in artificial intelligence, multimedia, networks, databases, and knowledge repositories, we have developed new applications such as virtual reality language teaching, augmented reality technology education, and smart contextual teaching. For friendly nations aiming to establish modern education and teaching environments, we can provide the best insights and examples.
